Hidden Gems: Underrated TV Shows You Need to Binge-Watch

There’s a lot of underrated TV out there, and sometimes it can be hard to know where to start. But don’t worry: the internet is here for you with its recommendations on what you should be watching next. We asked some of our editors which shows have been underrated (i.e., not talked about as much as they deserve), and here are their top picks for binging this weekend:

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

• Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an incredible show that’s been on Netflix for a few years now. It’s about Rebecca Bunch, who moves from New York City to West Covina, California to be with her ex-boyfriend Josh Chan. She has mental illness and she’s really funny, which makes for great comedy! The music is also amazing–the cast sings all the time!
• Crazy Ex-Girlfriend doesn’t get as much attention as some of the other shows on this list because it isn’t about superheroes or space travel (or dragons). But if you’re looking for something different from your usual binge-watching fare, then check out this gem of a series!

Masters of Sex

Masters of Sex is an underrated TV show about the real lives of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, who worked together at Washington University in St. Louis to study human sexuality. It stars Michael Sheen as Dr. Masters, Lizzy Caplan as Virginia Johnson and Caitlin Fitzgerald as Libby Calloway (the show’s version of Margaret Mead).

The showrunner for this drama series is Michelle Ashford–you might know her from her work on The Pacific or The Good Wife–and she created it alongside Hulu and Sony Pictures Television after being inspired by Thomas Maier’s book Masters of Sex: The Life & Times Of William Masters And Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love.

Masters was ultimately cancelled after four seasons due to low ratings; however fans were able to get closure with its final episode which aired in 2015

Lost Girl

Lost Girl is a Canadian drama about a bisexual succubus named Bo, who finds herself drawn into the world of supernatural creatures after discovering she has powers. The show has a good balance of action and drama, with an overarching plot that carries over multiple seasons. It also features a great cast (Anna Silk as Bo), and some very interesting characters–such as Kenzi (Ksenia Solo), an sassy human best friend who often provides comic relief; Trick (Rick Howland), Bo’s guardian angelic grandfather; Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried), her hot werewolf love interest; Lauren Lewis (Zoie Palmer) and Tamsin Reynolds (Rachel Skarsten) who are members of The Fae High Council; Vex’ahlia Raelon Lavellan–or “Vex” for short–played by Ivana Milicevic…

The soundtrack alone makes Lost Girl worth watching! There’s even an entire album available on iTunes called “Lost Girl: Season 5 Soundtrack.”

Russian Doll

Russian Doll is a comedy/drama series that stars Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov. She wakes up in the middle of a party, only to find herself stuck in an endless loop of dying and being reborn with no memory of what happened before. While this sounds like it would make for some pretty boring TV, Russian Doll manages to be both funny and engaging thanks to its focus on character development rather than plot twists or action sequences.

The show can feel slow at times–it’s definitely not for everyone–but if you’re looking for something different from your usual Netflix fare, give it a shot! It is certinly an underrated TV show that could become your fave.

The Flash

The Flash is a show about Barry Allen, a man who can run at super speed. That’s it. It’s not about any of the other things that happen on The Flash; it’s just about Barry running fast and saving people.

The show follows his journey as he learns how to use his powers responsibly and tries not to accidentally kill anyone with them, which is something he has trouble with at first because he runs so fast that he leaves behind sonic booms that are loud enough to stun people (and sometimes knock them unconscious). This makes him seem like less of a hero than you might expect from someone who saves lives by moving quickly through space–but don’t worry! Once you get used to this aspect of his character development over time, there are plenty more exciting adventures waiting for him in future seasons!

Homeland

Homeland is a psychological thriller set in the Middle East and focuses on a CIA operative who suspects that an American prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda. The show stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a bipolar CIA officer with an obsession with thwarting terrorist plots; Damian Lewis plays Nicholas Brody, the POW she believes could be working for terrorists; and Mandy Patinkin plays Saul Berenson, her boss at Langley.

Homeland has been called “the best show on TV” by critics who praise its tense action scenes and complex character development. It’s also won several Emmy Awards for its writing, acting, directing and sound mixing–so if you’re looking for something new to watch this weekend (or any time), give Homeland a try!

The Crown

The Crown is a Netflix Original that follows the early years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. It’s a historical drama set in the 1950s and 1960s, and it stars Claire Foy as the young Queen Elizabeth II.

Peter Morgan wrote every episode of The Crown, which means each season has its own distinct story arc — though they all focus on different parts of her life: her relationship with Prince Philip (Matt Smith), her coronation at age 25 (her real age), marrying Duke Of Edinburgh Philip Mountbatten (played by Matt Smith) and becoming pregnant with Prince Charles while dating him briefly before they got married (they were actually engaged).
